Seven of the nine
Opening Round brackets were decided today, and two “if necessary”
games will be played on Monday, May 13.
Sterling
was the first team to qualify
for this year's National Championship tournament. They won the
Oklahoma City bracket by defeating Oklahoma City 1-0
in the final. Steven Cazares pitched a three-hit shutout for the
Warriors. The only run of the game came on an RBI single by C Ian
Josh in the second inning.
The
Warriors got to the final by defeating Science and Arts of
Oklahoma 8-5, and Jamestown
13-3. DH Andrew Clark hit a
grand slam home run against USAO; Daniel Cloteaux got the win,
despite allowing 13 hits and walking four in six inning of work
(story).
The Warriors got six runs in the first inning against Jamestown, led
by a bases-loaded triple by 3B Anthony Feliciano. Feliciano, from
Bayamon, Puerto Rico, had a total of six RBI for the game. The
Warriors used four pitchers, gave up 14 hits (story).
This will be
Sterling's first-ever appearance in the National Championship
tournament. The school is located in Sterling, KS. It has 674
students, and supports 16 varsity sports.

NAIA baseball action during the past week, with Boyd Nation's ISR

ISR #1 Lewis-Clark
State is also #1 in strength of schedule. They swept
four games against Menlo,
10-3, 8-1, 2-0, and 11-7. 2B Brian Corliss was 2-for-4 with a
bases-loaded triple in the first game (story).
RF Cody Lavalli went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the
second game. Carsen Nylund and Steve Thompson combined for the
shutout in the third game; Nylund went eight innings, allowed two
hits, struck out eight. LF Jake Shirley scored the winning run on a
ground out by CF Zach Holley in the first inning (story).
Lavalli hit another home run in the fourth game, went 2-for-4 with
four RBI (story).
The Warriors host Oregon Tech
March 15-16 (streaming
audio). They then travel to Daytona Beach, FL for six games,
starting with Saint Thomas on March 18.
#2 Faulkner lost a
mid-week game to Point, 3-2. All three of Point's runs were
unearned, and Tommy Braddock got the win for the Skyhawks. The Eagles
then lost the first game of a series at Spring Hill, 6-5 (ten
innings). The Eagles trailed most of the game, but took a 5-4 lead in
the top of the ninth on three unearned runs. The Badgers sent it into
extra innings with an RBI single by 2B Brian Sims. The winning run
came on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Trey Marshall. Douglas
Keller, who allowed only one hit the last three innings, got the win
(story).
The Badgers didn't get another run in the series; the Eagles won
the remaining two games 6-0 and 11-0. Will Dismukes and Julian
Esquibel pitched the shutouts. 1B Ethan Williams hit a three-run home
run in the first game, and C Zach Colby went 3-for-4 with a home run
and four RBI in the second game. (story).
The Eagles are 21-4, and Esquibel is 6-0 in six starts, with an
ERA of 1.05. The Eagles visit Blue Mountain March 12, and host #18
William Carey March 15-16.
NAIA baseball action during the past week.
#1 Tennessee Wesleyan defeated Georgia Gwinnett 2-1,
and won two of three against Saint Andrew's, 2-0, 6-5, and
2-3. The winning run against Georgia Gwinnett came on an RBI single
by SS Wes Minton in the bottom of the ninth. Corey Rhoney and Noah
Piard combined for the shutout in the first Saint Andrew's game;
Rhoney went eight innings, allowed four hits, struck out seven. In
the second game, the Knights out-hit the Bulldogs 12-7; the Bulldogs
scored all six of their runs in the first inning. CF Travis Burnside
hit a two-RBI single, then scored the winning run on a misplayed
ground ball. In the third game, the defending champions were held to
six hits by Joe McCarty and Evan Tucker. RF Michael Durig batted in
all three of the Knights' runs.
The Bulldogs are now 15-5. They visit Belhaven March 5-6, host
Milligan March 9-10, and host Ohio Christian March 11.
#2 LSU-Shreveport got an easy 15-5 mid-week win over
Division III Louisiana College, but was swept by Texas Wesleyan,
5-1, 12-8, and 6-5. Derek Vaughn got the win for the Rams in the
first game; he went six innings, allowed one run on two hits, struck
out four. Connor Zamora and Nolan Barbee kept the Pilots off the
board the rest of the way, and Zamora struck out three of the six
batters he faced. CF Trevor Moon singled in the winning run (story).
In the second game, the Rams scored ten runs in the second inning,
capped by a three-RBI double by SS David Kiriakos. The Pilots out-hit
the Rams 11-7 in the third game. They got within one run in the top
of the ninth, and had the go-ahead run on first with nobody out.
However, reliever Patrick Stanley got two strikeout and a fly out to
end the game and get a save (story).
Northwood (TX), who has
won seven straight, has the lead in the Red River Athletic
Conference. The Rams are two games back, and the Pilots are three
games back. The Pilots visit LSU-Alexandria March 5, and host
Huston-Tillotson March 8-9. Streaming

NAIA baseball action during the past week.
#1 Tennessee Wesleyan lost a mid-week game to #12 Lindsey
Wilson 4-3. The Bulldogs outhit
the Blue Raiders 9-7; LF Leandro Andino hit a sacrifice fly to send
in the winning run. (story).
The defending champions then swept three games against
Indiana-Southeast, 12-2, 3-1, and 2-1. In the first game, Four
Bulldog pitchers combined to hold the Grenadiers to four hits; Jarrod
Jameson got the win. SS Wes Minton scored the winning run in the
second game on a passed ball; Corey Rhoney got the win, went 5 2/3
innings, allowed four hits, struck out five. In the third game, the
Bulldogs managed only two hits off Grenadiers pitcher Lucas Harry,
but RF David Donald was hit by a pitch and scored on a ground out for
the first Bulldog run, and Minton hit a solo home run for the winning
run. Tyler Wilson got the win; he went 4 2/3 innings, allowed two
hits, struck out seven.
The Bulldogs host Georgia Gwinnett February 27, and Saint
Andrew's, who is 9-1, March 2-3.
#2 LSU-Shreveport swept Texas College, 14-4, 3-2,
and 8-4. Rory Young got the win in the first game. The Pilots needed
a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and final inning by C
David Dorton to win the second game. CF Ridge Gonsoulin hit a two-run
home run in the third game, finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
The Pilots host Division III Louisiana College February 26, and
visit Texas Wesleyan March 1-2.

Logan Norris pitched a three-hitter for the Pilots, struck out six, walked three. RF Kade Billeaudeaux hit a sacrifice fly for the winning run. Billeaudeaux went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
At Kingsport, TN:
Tennessee Wesleyan 14, Saint Francis (IL) 4:
The Bulldogs got all the runs they needed in the third inning, on RBI singles by 1B Jake Stone and 3B Taylor Oldham, and a three-RBI double by DH Drew Levi. Levi went 3-for-5 with four RBI. Jeremy Fitzgerald got the win. Saint Francis used eight pitchers.

At Hardeeville, SC:
South Carolina-Beaufort 7, Faulkner 3: The #5-ranked Eagles went two-and-out, and the Sand Sharks gave Corey Black his second loss of the season. The Sand Sharks scored five runs in the last two innings, and the winning run came on a pinch-hit RBI single by Blake Cilwick. Miles Galvin got the win for the Sand Sharks, struck out eleven. The Sand Sharks play Union U. (TN) on Saturday, and the winner plays Saint Thomas.
Saint Thomas (FL) 6, Union U. (TN) 3: The Bobcats go to 2-0 in the tournament. Pinch-hitter Oscar Romero hit a two-RBI single for the winning run.
At Paducah, KY:
LSU-Shreveport 1, Lindsey Wilson 0:
Lindsey Wilson starter Darren Travers gave up a run in the first inning on an RBI single by 1B Greg Friesen, and held the Pilots scoreless the rest of the way. The Pilots needed a shutout from Jared Mortensen, and got one. Mortensen held the Blue Raiders to four hits, struck out ten, and walked only one. The Pilots will face the Peru State-Lindsey Wilson winner tomorrow for the championship.
Oklahoma City (19-4, 10-1 SAC) defeated Southern
Nazarene 12-11, and swept three
games against Mid-America Christian,
15-5, 8-1, and 11-0. 2B Brian Fisher went 3-for-5 with a home run,
five RBI, and two runs scored against Southern Nazarene. CC/RF Dane
Phillips hit a three-run home run in the first game against
Mid-America Christian. Cody Crabaugh got the win in the second game,
allowed two hits in five innings. Davis Henderson, Will Patrigo, and
Allen Townsend combined for the shutout in the third game; Henderson
recorded ten strikeouts. The Stars host Bethany March
12, Southern Nazarene March 13, and Briar Cliff March 17-18.
Concordia-Irvine (15-6, 7-1 GSAC) won two of three in a
non-conference series against Cal State-San Marcos,
losing 7-3 and winning 8-7 (10 innings) and 6-5. James Dykstra went
the distance for the Cougars in the first game, allowed three runs on
six hits, struck out seven. LF Kyle Konicek hit an RBI single for the
winning run in the second game. CF John Doering laid down a bunt to
score 2B Chris Limus for the winning run in the third game. The
Eagles visit Point Loma Nazarene March
16, host Point Loma Nazarene March 17, and host Sioux Falls
18 and 21. The Eagles are tied with Azusa Pacific for
the lead in the Golden State Athletic Conference.
Oklahoma City (8-3) defeated Southern Nazarene 8-4
in mid-week. The Stars scored six runs in the first inning, and Blake
Schwartz recorded seven strikeouts in six innings of work. The Stars
then dropped two games to MidAmerica Nazarene, 8-4 and 4-2. In
the first game, RF Josh Greer hit two home runs for the Pioneers,
batted in five of their eight runs. In the second game, Pioneer
starter Tino Luna recorded ten strikeouts in six innings, held
the Stars to five hits. The Stars rebounded with two wins over
Bellevue, 7-2 and 5-1. Rich Hawkins pitched a complete game in
the first one, SS Chris Muñoz went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI
in the second one. The Stars host Northwood (TX) Feb. 21, U.
of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Feb. 23, then visit USAO Feb. 25.
Concordia-Irvine (6-4) swept three games against Patten,
9-1, 12-0, and 11-7. The first game was closer than the score
indicates; see campus
visit. Jake Hovis went the distance in the shutout, struck out
ten. RF Ty Holm went 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in the third
game. The Eagles begin their defense of their Golden State Athletic
Conference championship at home against San Diego Christian Feb.
23, then visit San Diego Christian Feb. 25.
Lee (11-2) lost two midweek games, 9-3 to Union C. (KY)
and 8-7 to Tennessee Wesleyan. The Flames led Tennessee
Wesleyan 7-6 going into the ninth inning. They had the bases loaded
with no outs in the top of the ninth, and couldn't get an insurance
run. Tennessee Wesleyan got two cheap runs in the bottom of the ninth
to win it. The Flames swept Emmanuel over the weekend, 12-1,
2-1, and 8-5. Kris Hall struck out eleven in the mercy-rule shortened
first game. The winning run in the second game came on a solo home
run by 1B Roberto Reyes. The Flames trailed the third game 5-2 at one
point, got a good five-inning relief effort from James Rechenbach.
The Flames host Rio Grande Feb. 20 and Lindsey Wilson
Feb.22, and visit U. of Mobile Feb. 24-25.
OF Bryan Abrey of Lewis-Clark State is the batting champion of the Western Major Baseball League. He batted .423 for the Medicine Hat Mavericks, and went on a 21-35 tear at the end of the regular season, and is 5-7 with a home run so far in the playoffs.
Ryan Rogers of Lindsey Wilson made the all-star team as a left-handed pitcher. He plays for the Okotoks Dawgs, went 4-4, 2.16 ERA, and 61 strikeouts. In his first playoff start, he allowed six hits, struck out six.
Nick Senior of British Columbia made the all-star team as an outfielder. Playing for the Melville Millionaires, he batted .327, with 35 RBI and three home runs. He batted .417 in three playoff games.
Okotoks and Medicine Hat are still alive in the WMBL playoffs.
