National Championship recap for May 27

Results from the first day of the NAIA Baseball National Championship, in Lewiston, ID:

Concordia-Irvine 7, Faulkner 2
LSU-Shreveport 5, Lee 4
Lubbock Christian 7, Oklahoma Baptist 2
Lewis-Clark State 5, Tennessee Wesleyan 4

Concordia-Irvine 7, Faulkner 2

Faulkner started their ace, R.L. Eisenbach, and Concordia was able to score four runs on five hits on him in only three-plus innings. Eisenbach was chased by a two-RBI double by 2B Robbie Knowles. The first of the two RBI held up as the winning run; Concordia starter Dean Persinger held Faulkner to two runs on four hits over the first six innings, and reliever Josh White held Faulkner scoreless the rest of the way.

Knowles got a sacrifice fly late in the game, and finished 1-3 with three RBI. LF Kyle Konicek went 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

LSU-Shreveport 5, Lee 4

The Flames out-hit the Pilots 9-5, and went into the ninth innings with a 4-1 lead. However, Flames starter Shay Crawford, who struck out 15 batters and allowed only four hits, hit the first batter of the ninth inning. He was replaced by Kris Hall, who walked both batters he faced, loading the bases. The Flames sent in Maxx Catapano, who gave up an RBI single by 2B Michael Diffie, then walked in two runs, tying the game 4-4. Catapano was replaced by Matt Passauer, who got a force-out at the plate and a fly out. However, Passauer walked C Andrew Brouillette, forcing in the winning run.

Cade Bowen, who pitched the last two innings, got the win. Diffie finished the game 2-4.

Lubbock Christian 7, Oklahoma Baptist 2

Chaparrals starter Lucas Whitmore had a two-hit shutout going into the ninth inning, but gave up a two-run home run by DH Michael Sliger for only runs of the game for the Bison. The Chaps got the winning run in the fourth inning on a two-RBI single by CF Brent Leslie. DH Ryan Meade went 2-4 for the Chaps. Richie Morowski got the loss for the Bison.

Lewis-Clark State 5, Tennessee Wesleyan 4

A two-RBI double by SS Kevin Lovelace, a run scored by Lovelace on an error, and sacrifice flies by DH Brian Gaylord and RF Gino Casini gave the Warriors a 5-0 lead after five innings. The Bulldogs came back with three runs in the sixth on a run walked in and a two-RBI single by 1B Ryan Santos in the sixth, and an RBI single by 3B Anthony Boix in the eighth. However, Anstin Pentecost, who relieved Warrior starter Tyrell Poggemeyer in the sixth, was able to hold the Bulldogs to one run over the final 3 1/3 innings; Poggemeyer got the win, and Pentecost got a save. Pentecost had pitched only 18 2/3 innings prior to this tournament. Lovelace finished the game 3-5. Josh McDaniel got the loss. Attendance: 2,990.

Bob Broughton started going to British Columbia home games in 2001, and was favorably impressed with the caliber of play. This led to annual trips to the NAIA Baseball National Championship in Lewiston, ID, a nine-hour drive from Vancouver. He retired in Guanajuato, Mexico in 2012.
