RHP Luke Gregerson, who played college ball at Saint Xavier, and LHP J.C. Romero, who played for Mobile, played in the final of the World Baseball Classic in Los Angeles. Gregerson played for the champion, U.S.A., and Romero played for the runner-up, Puerto Rico.
Gregerson was drafted by the Cardinals in 2006, after playing four seasons for the Cougars. In his final season, his record was 3-1, 0.68 ERA, nine saves, and 32 strikeouts. He was also .330 at the plate. That season was the Cougars' last appearance at the Baseball National Championship; he made no mound appearances, but hit a double against Lewis-Clark State. He currently plays for the Astros. His record last season was 4-3, 3.28 ERA, an impressive 15 saves, and 67 strikeouts. He made four appearances in the World Baseball Classic, and got saves in three of them. He pitched four innings, did not allow a hit, struck out three, and walked one.
Romero was drafted by the Twins in 1997. In his final season with the Rams, he went 4-2, 3.40 ERA, struck out 63. He was .299 with six home runs and 33 RBI at the plate. He played 14 seasons in the Major Leagues (seven of them with the Twins), had a career record of 34-28, 4.16 ERA. He played for Puebla in the Mexican League in 2015, but pitched only six innings. He played in Puerto Rico in 2016. He pitched one inning (two appearances) in the World Baseball Classic, allowed one hit.
